Reddings Retreat - Tintern Station – Brockweir Riverside Loop

Grade: Easy to slightly moderate Distance: 3.5 miles (5.6 km) circular Time: ~2 ½ hours Start Point: Reddings Retreat, Tintern

A gentle riverside circuit that launches from Reddings Retreat along the Wye Valley Walk into Tintern, crosses the footbridge into England, loops through woodland and Brockweir village, then returns into Wales via the Wireworks Bridge back to Tintern. Mostly flat with a few stiles, two gradual climbs and one steep, slightly rocky descent—walking boots are advisable.

🗺️ Route Stages

Riverside Warm-Up

• Follow the Wye Valley Walk from Reddings Retreat through the woods into Tintern village to the footbridge.

• Approx. 0.8 mile | 20 minutes

Abbey Mill & Village

• Cross into Tintern village, pass Abbey Mill water wheel and playing fields, then continue toward Tintern Garage.

• Approx. 0.4 mile | 15 minutes

St Michael’s Passage
• Just before Catbrook turn, bear right down the road to St Michael’s Church, skirt the churchyard and pick up the riverside footpath across small bridges.
• Approx. 0.3 mile | 10 minutes

Old Station Steps
• Follow signs to the Old Station: past the signal box, playground and up a flight of steps onto Brockweir Bridge—take care, there’s no pavement here.
• Approx. 0.6 mile | 25 minutes

Brockweir Village Ramble
• Turn right off the bridge into Brockweir village, pass the Malt House, then right on a narrow path through gardens to the white-painted Moravian Church.
• Approx. 0.4 mile | 15 minutes

Bridleway Climb & Descent
• Cross a stile into fields, join a bridleway climbing gently through trees, then descend steeply to meet the old tramway and bear left to the Wireworks Bridge.
• Approx. 0.6 mile | 30 minutes

Riverside Return
• Cross back into Wales, walk out to the main road, then re-join the Wye Valley Walk for the riverside stroll back to Reddings Retreat via Tintern Station and Abbey car park.
• Approx. 0.8 mile | 25 minutes

Guest Tip: Muddy patches on the descent can be slippery—sturdy boots or grippy trainers will keep you confident. Start early or late to enjoy quieter riverside sections.
