Description: The mallard, Anas platyrhynchos, is a medium to large dabbling duck and is the most abundant duck species in UK. The mallard drake - male duck is often called a “greenhead” due to its distinctive iridescent green head, & is easily identifiablewith its green head along with its yellow bill, chestnut breast, & gray body. Females are mottled brown with orange and black splotches on the bill. The females are known for making the quintessential “quack” of a duck.
Found almost anywhere with water including ponds, lakes, streams, creeks, rivers & various wetland habitats. Often in flocks, & frequently mixes with other duck species. Frequently hybridizes with those species, which can be even more confusing. Any bird with extensive white in the tail or curled feathers above the tail has some Mallard genes.
