🌄 Local Area Highlights

Welcome to the Wye Valley

From the moment you arrive at Reddings Retreat, you’re surrounded by the beauty of the Wye Valley — rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and riverside paths just waiting to be explored. Whether you’re here for a peaceful escape, an active adventure, or a little of both, our local area is brimming with treasures.

📍 Perfectly Placed

We’re tucked away in the charming village of Tintern, just a short stroll from the River Wye and the world‑famous Tintern Abbey.

  • Chepstow – 10 minutes by car (or let Robert collect you from the station)

  • Forest of Dean – 15 minutes

  • Monmouth – 25 minutes

  • Bristol & Cardiff – under an hour

🏛 Tintern Abbey & Village

Step back in time at the awe‑inspiring ruins of Tintern Abbey, founded in 1131. Wander the riverside, browse local craft shops, and enjoy a pint or cream tea in one of the village pubs.

Robert’s Tip: For the best Abbey view, take the footpath from the old railway bridge just before sunset.

🚶‍♀️ Wye Valley Walk

The Wye Valley Walk passes right through Tintern — and right past Reddings Retreat — offering miles of scenic trails. As an Approved Wye Valley Walk Accommodation, we’re perfectly placed for walkers to rest, recharge, and set out again with ease. Choose a gentle riverside stroll or a more challenging climb for panoramic views, then return to comfort just steps from the path.

Find out more about our facilities for walkers on our Walker Welcome page.

🌲 Forest of Dean

From Tintern, simply cross the old wire railway bridge and you’ll step from Wales into England — and straight onto the traffic‑free cycle path that winds through the ancient woodlands of the Royal Forest of Dean. Wander the nearby forest trails or pedal at your own pace, with wildlife and woodland views all around. For adventures a little further afield, take a short drive to explore the famous Sculpture Trail or try canoeing on the River Wye.

Find some of our favourite routes on our Local Walks page.

🍽 Local Food & Drink

From farm shops and artisan bakeries to riverside pubs and fine dining, the Wye Valley is a food lover’s delight. We’re happy to share our favourite hidden gems when you arrive — and you can explore more on our Local Shops, Food & Venues page.

Seasonal Spotlight

We love the Wye Valley in every season — each brings its own magic for walks, wildlife, and local life:

🌸 Spring – Bluebells and wild garlic scent the woods, lambs play in the fields, and the first market strawberries appear.

☀️ Summer – Long, golden evenings by the river, perfect for picnics, paddles, and spotting kingfishers or dragonflies.

🍁 Autumn – Fiery woodland colours, misty mornings, and market stalls piled high with pumpkins, apples, and spiced bakes.

❄️ Winter – Frost‑tipped hills, crisp skies for bracing walks, and cosy pub fires to end the day.
