From the first bees of spring to the last butterflies of autumn, our paddocks, wildflower borders, and woodland edges hum with life. The Wye Valley AONB supports over 25 butterfly species and countless pollinators, alongside seasonal blooms from bluebells to foxgloves. These smaller wonders are a joy for photographers, walkers, and anyone who loves to slow down and notice the details.
Common Residents (seen year‑round)
Honey bee, buff‑tailed bumblebee, red‑tailed bumblebee, common carder bee, hoverflies, ladybird, green shield bug, meadow grasshopper, common earwig.
Seasonal Highlights
Spring: Bluebells, wood anemone, early purple orchid, brimstone butterfly, orange‑tip butterfly. Summer: Common spotted orchid, bee orchid, marbled white butterfly, meadow brown butterfly, banded demoiselle, beautiful demoiselle. Autumn: Devil’s‑bit scabious, red admiral butterfly, speckled wood butterfly, dragonflies over the pond. Winter: Seed heads and frost‑rimmed grasses, occasional winter‑flying moths.
Nearby Highlights
Within 10 minutes of Reddings Retreat, the River Wye is home to the rare common clubtail dragonfly (best seen May–July) and two dazzling damselflies — the banded and beautiful demoiselles — often seen fluttering above the water in summer.
And for something completely different, keep an eye out for Sammy the Seal — a regular visitor to the tidal Wye and a favourite with locals.
